The Vinculum

Kasuto is now 30 years old. In recognition of this fact, I encourage all of you to give me $30. Anyone? Well, it was worth a shot. At least now I can resonably complain about "kids these days."

First impressions:

- Name will take some getting used to.

- Looks a bit like the fake WW remake everyone was clamouring for a while back.

- "Realistic" cel-shading is an interesting way to go, but first environments look terribly bland.

- New items show plenty of promise, particularly the new hookshot/bow/grappling hook thingamajig.

- There MUST be a bomb-bowling minigame somewhere :D

- If that's the main music theme I'm afraid that's a little forgettable too.

- 2011? Boo. Although as I said the graphics, both technically and artistically, could do with some improvement.

I'm pretty excited! I think the gameplay's going to be a totally new experience, without the game being drastically different to "Zelda" - it certainly looked familiar - but I hope the rumours about the dungeon-overworld-dungeon formula changing are true.

I love the graphics. They're still going to be refined before the final release, but I think this style suits Zelda perfectly. I'm not the biggest Toon Link fan, so I love this new style and the fact that they're using a version of Link similar to TP Link, instead of Adult Toon Link :P

FT, the music was used in one of the TP trailers too. Miyamoto all but said there'd be orchestrated music in this game :D

You all disgust me.

Despite how inactive this forum is, you'd think that there'd be more than two replies for a new Zelda game announcement.

I'm excited. What else can be said? I like the graphical approach and I'm looking forward to a full orchestrated soundtrack instead of just midi stuff.

Excited is an understatement for me, really looking forward to just how much polish they're going to get done between now and next year. I'm enjoying the graphics, the orchestral soundtrack is just a bonus and I'm looking forward to the new items we may be getting and the unique mechanics that we'll be getting to go with the hopping between the Sky World and the lower world.

I'm excited but, at the same time, nervous. While I enjoy the look, it DOES make some aspects look bland and undetailed--like Torque said--so I hope that's something they polish up. Some of the monsters also look a little childish for my taste, but I'm hoping the more sinister the monster, the more dark his appearance, but I'm not sure that's going to happen. And then of course there's the name. It's not bad, but then it doesn't have the same punch as past Zelda hits though. It's nowhere near all bad though. I enjoy most of what I see, and cel-shading opens up a wide range of movements for Link, which suits me just fine. I'm also looking forward to new items. Though TP had a few new items, the last game to REALLY change up the inventory was Wind Waker, and I'm looking forward to that half-minute of joy you spend fiddling with an item trying to figure out how it works.

So, as it is, I'm pleased. I don't see it coming close to OoT's place as best Zelda game ever, but it could eclipse Twilight Princess or LTTP if it tries.

It looks cool but Nintendo had me at Donkey Kong Country and Metroid.

The game so far looks pretty good. im really digging the graphic style which blends the best elements from the wind waker and the twilight princess ( i loved the coloring and shading from the wind waker but the body proportions got on my nerves and twilight princess graphics were too dark at times).
But I really don't like the title at all and the environments are kinda bland. but overall the game looks good, and i hope too see whole new items in this game and whole new locations too.

I'm actually not a big fan of the graphic style, it looks like they tried to mix cel-shade and 3-D and it ended up looking like a bizarro fusion of both. It makes Link look out of place when he looks just like he did in Brawl when the world looks a lot like Wind Waker.

Also, not digging that they kept Suwabe instead of going back to Hiyama for Link's voice.

The graphics style does look awful, however that doesn't mean I'm not excited. As previously said, the environments look a bit bland, but hey they have until 2011 to bulk it out a bit.

I'm not sure I actually like the look of the sword fighting though, it looks like it could be awkward.. and dare I say it, active.

Still, as long as it's Zelda, I don't care!

What an excellent game.

This is probably, in terms of overall satisfaction, my favorite 3d Zelda game. The combat feels fun, the game is the most challenging since ALttP, and it had a well thought-out story.

Fi is overall far more annoying and persistent than Navi ever was. I take back everything bad I said about Navi (except her shrill voice). I've decided that Fi is a Vulcan. Not a cool Vulcan like Spock, or a hot Vulcan like T'Pol, but simply and annoying, incessant twerp who would make Surak forgo all logic and weep openly (Star Trek nerd joke).

Fi, I don't care what your analysis says. I know I only have two hearts left, thanks for caring. And I really could do without her little interpretive dance routine that she does.

But other than that, I'm loving this game so far. I'm not done yet, but I've been spending every free moment playing it. I just got those fireproof earrings, and I'm making my way through some volcano.

I love flying the bird. It's fun. But why doesn't it have a name? Link's horse had a name, so it would be sensible for his bird to have a name. Maybe Chirpy, or Flappy.

But so far I'm really digging this Ghirahim guy. He is such an over-the-top cheesy supervillain that I can't help but love him. He's like a Bond villain who's sort of gay looking (no offense to gay people). I like to imagine that Ghirahim is a typical anime pretty boy who turned evil.

Overall, I think this game is fantastic. Although I still prefer mashing buttons, the MotionPlus thing is starting to grow on me. Although I have to say that my right arm has never gotten such a workout before. I'll be arm-wrestling in no time.

The way Fi spoke struck me as kind of cute at first, but she quickly became annoying due to her habit of telling me things I already knew - just like Navi, only more times. She seemed to do this more in the later part of the game though.

Overall I loved the game. The final sequence of fights was epic.

I posted some of my initial impressions of the game when I was about a third of the way through, as it's nearly 3am right now I'm linking to it instead of typing it up again.

I too didn't like Fi. I was okay with some of the dancing and whatnot and the notifications when my batteries were getting low, but I was really annoyed by her constant spouting of statistics. Seriously, why do you bother? We've just encountered the same-looking chest (the Boss Chest) for the sixth time already, and you're NOT 100% sure it contains a Boss Key? What else can be in there? Majora's Mask? Well, you say there's a 5% chance for something else to be in there, so I suppose I should believe you.

Anyway, I was also okay with the controls, but at times I couldn't tell if my problems with them were due to my positioning in front of the screen or the game itself. For instance, there were times when Link wouldn't raise his sword for a skyward strike when I moved the remote in that manner. If you've been to the final boss (or are about it), it's very important that you get that dang sword in the air as soon as you need to. Trust me, your hearts depend on that. Other than that, I haven't suffered too badly in battle from the controls, and I think the skyward strike was the only real problem I've had.

Overall, I really enjoyed the game, and I almost didn't get it yet because classes were about to start. I have to admit, though: I sort of felt better about TP in different ways. I still love both games, but I couldn't help but feel that Skyward Sword was missing something that TP had at times. I suppose SS was missing more dramatic emotional points (one thing I love in a Zelda game) and there didn't seem to be much of a background story going on before the main conflict began. I also wished there was a more touch ending, especially when Zelda was about to say something to Link before the cyclone took her away, but oh well. I did like TP's as well, and I suppose it was Midna as a character (SS didn't introduce anyone important in the plot besides the villains) that gave TP that spark that stood out to me. If there's one thing I really loved about SS, it's the locations, music, and boss battles. While I didn't like that most of the journeying was done in just three locations, it was nice to see that you got to see more parts of it as you made more visits to them. By far, I'd say Lanayru was my favorite place, even though I hate quicksand. While I preferred the "past" Lanayru Desert (I'm sure we'd all love to see the entire place in the past), I also liked some of the scenes of the present desert, especially when you're in the ship dungeon, looking for the Sacred Flame. As for the bosses, I'd say I was satisfied as usual. While not too many of them stuck out to me (besides the ones with Ghirahim and his master), I quite liked the battle with the Ancient Cistern's boss and I REALLY liked the sword that you got to use. Seriously, that thing is STRONG. Sure, it's very heavy, but that thing whacked away all the Bobokins and delivered a lot of damage to the boss. Perhaps, when (or if) a new Zelda game comes out when Link is older and stronger, he'll get to keep that sword in addition to the Master Sword (fat chance, but one can dream). Finally, the music. I loved pretty much every track and every part of it (orchestrated rocks), and the one track that stood out to me was the Overworld theme. That's probably the best overworld theme in my opinion, minus OoT's which is classic thus can never be replaced. TP's is still very great, SS's is still the winner in my book.
