The Vinculum

Kasuto is now 30 years old. In recognition of this fact, I encourage all of you to give me $30. Anyone? Well, it was worth a shot. At least now I can resonably complain about "kids these days."

Okay, so the phone rang about thirty minutes ago. I answered, and I was told that my home foreclosed and they had a way that I could work with them. I told them I wasn't interested, but they insisted that I didn't have a choice because I owed them money. Well, I thought it was a typical telemarketing scam because I've received many in the past that state that I am losing my car (despite not even owning one).

Having never taken out a loan or mortgage of any kind, I asked the person to restate where this home was. He stated that it was in Lawndale. I've never heard of the place. I told him that I've never owned a home. He asked me if he was speaking to a David Quick (Which is my name). I told him that he was. He then asked me to verify who I was by asking for the last four digits of my social security number. Thinking that I might be a victim of identity theft, I gave it to him. He said that the last four digits of my social and the last four digits of the social on his records didn't add up. He apologized several times for wasting my time. And that was that.

Then as I hang up, I wondered if this entire thing was a scam to get the last four digits of my social so my identity could be stolen. Was this a foolish mistake on my part? Does anyone with any kind of experience relating to this think that I am in any danger? What should I do?

There's not much that identity thieves can do with the last four digits of your social security number (that I know of). Anyway, I recommend getting in contact with your local police department and life insurance company, provided that you have the latter.

As long as there's nothing they can do with the last 4 digits of your SS number than you should be ok. I don't know how SS numbers work over there, but it does seem like a scam to me. I've heard of a similar scam, where someone pretends to be from your bank reporting charges you didn't make to your credit card, and along the way they ask you to read the 3 digit code on the card to prove you have the card with you. However, they have the card number already, and with the code they then go and make online purchases with the number.

After researching it a bit, I think I'm just going to keep an eye on my bank account and put out a fraud alert if something happens.

There's not really much you could do with my identity. I don't have any credit so it's not like anyone could take out a loan or mortgage.
