Narrative Theory in Interactive Game Design Coursework Specification
Project Task:
Part One: Critical Essay (50% Weighting)
Write a 1000 word narrative analysis of a videogame of your choice. The essay should analyse and discuss the devices and techniques used to create the overall narrative experience within the game. It may be useful to consider:
Character development and environment design.
The relationships between player motivation, progression and reward.
Non-interactive elements such as cut-scenes.
The delivery method of gameplay instruction and exposition.
Aural stimuli – story through dialogue, music and/or sound effects.
The dramatic pacing and delivery.
Wasn't sure whether to put this here or in Gaming Discussion, but I suppose I'm asking for help. Are there any particular games you think would be good to analyse in this paper? I have a lot of experience of Mario, Zelda, Pokémon etc. on which to draw, but I don't know if I can stretch their relatively limited narratives to a decent 1000 words. Candidates already put to me include Half-Life, Bioshock, Portal and Prototype. It was also suggested that it might in fact be easier to write about a game with a rubbish narrative, such as Call of Juarez, as our lecturer so passionately ranted.
Discuss.
