The Vinculum

Kasuto is now 30 years old. In recognition of this fact, I encourage all of you to give me $30. Anyone? Well, it was worth a shot. At least now I can resonably complain about "kids these days."

i like your site but it needs a way to comunicate t other members faster without any problems. by adding a shout box we would all be able to discuss our opinions on subjects within the vincilum and also say hello to our fellow zelda fans and fanfic writers.

Shout boxes are generally for blogs and such. Kasuto.net doesn't need one. It'd just get filled with spam like all the story review pages. If you need to say something, just say it on the Vinculum.

i think it has come up before and was shot down, though I'm not sure, and if it was I can't remember why.

I don't particularly like the idea. I can think of way too much potential for abuse. Half the messages would probably be things like:

i r teh r0x0rz lol

zelda's gay y do u guyz like zelda cuz he's gay?

I like kittens ^_^

No, I don't think it would work out too well.

You'd need more than 5 users on at the same time for that to happen. Same for the chatroom, you argued there would be too much potential for abuse, but the unofficial chatroom which topic is pinned on Gen Disc is dead as a doornail.

Plus, we're talking about a shoutbox forum mod here; people would need to be logged in on their forum account to post on the shoutbox.

i would agree with the person posted above me if there was no way to use the shout box without being logged in than no one could post bad stuff in there with out being caught. then you could just kick them off the site for not complying with the rules.

The Pros and Cons of Shout Boxes
Pros:
1)Fast Messaging.
2)A easier way to got a group of people to talk at the same time.
3)Anyone could see the Shout Box/Replies would be quicker(See 1)
Cons:
1)Spamming(Ub3r h@x0r j00 n00b)
2)Topics often gets carried away or switched.
3)Cursing(Profanity Filter?)
4)No privacy for certain subjects(where PMs will work)

If you have to log on, what's the point of having one? Just log on and send a message to some one. And it won't be very useful, because the other person has to be logged on ANYWAY, so it'd be easier to just use the personal messages.

Or AIM. That way, it's faster, easier, and other stuff. Not to mention chatrooms work just as wlel.

Yeah, but the AIM chatrooms are highly elitist and clique-y. With a shoutbox, you don't have to be invited.

The point of shoutboxes is that they're like chatrooms but not as real-timeish, which is perfect for places where a real chatroom would be a totally dead place.

And as far as I know, you can only send PMs to only one person at a time.

Another problem, though, is that there's a risk of the shoutbox ending up being the only active part of the forum.

Exactly why we should revive #vinculum. I set chatzilla to open the channel at startup, but the only person in there other than me is Sephy.
