The Vinculum

Kasuto is now 30 years old. In recognition of this fact, I encourage all of you to give me $30. Anyone? Well, it was worth a shot. At least now I can resonably complain about "kids these days."

Before the hacking, we could get any color we want for our font through the profile and dont have to deal with putting down BB tabs all the time. And I really miss that option, if it's not too much trouble, could you please consider bringing that back?

I really think something like quick reply is a little more important right now.

Although, it is a nice feature to have. We need both back, and soon.

Also, more than everything else, we need to get the forum patched. I don't know which version the forums are running right now, because the 2.0.5 tag below is just a leftover from the old database and doesn't correspond to the actual version of the files, but I'm damn sure it isn't the lastest one, since the hacking stuff was way before this last security update from phpBB. It's pretty serious. I don't feel safe using the PM system on this forum anymore and I don't use my password for this forum in any other forum either because of those issues. It's just a matter of time before another 13 years old script-kiddie like the last (if our well known previous asshole didn't get tired of defacing boards already) takes advantage of the critical holes this forum has. I don't know, I'd rather have a forum without any modifications than a forum where I need to change my password every week and delete every PM I receive / send.
I know Kasuto is busy, but if he can't fix it right now, couldn't he at least ask someone else to do it? Heck, even I could patch the boards if I was asked to, I patched the DSP boards 4 times already (they were at 2.0.9 when they were installed) without losing any modifications / hacks. All it takes is a few hours of Ctrl+F, Del, Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V. I'm sure that many people around here would be willing to help.

In an extreme case, if Kasuto doesn't have the sort of time to do the boards maintenance, why not hire someone to take care of the boards? Many popular sites have their forums in subdomains and the other forum admins can only access that subdomain, leaving them without FTP access to the rest of the site, which is good, because of all the trust issues. Kasuto could easly transfer the boards to an URL like http://forum.kasuto.net or http://vinculum.kasuto.net and give FTP access to a forum admin to perform the (rather boring) tasks of patching / modding them. We even already have people among the mods that could do that job, I'm sure that at least Lysia could fix the boards with her eyes closed if she had access to the board files and the trust problems would be non-existant in this case, since Kasuto obviously trusts Lysia.

So why not?

Oh, btw, I use this Firefox extension as a quick way to apply the BBCode for color and other codes. It's really helpful.

I use that as well Sephy! lol

Anyway, he is right. I think that having a subdomain for the forums would be a lot easier to remember, it literally takes seconds to add the subdomain and the access rights to it. I've changed my own so many times in CPanel.

Further, if you just patch you usually don't loose any mods.

Actually, the mods do disappear if you just replace the patched files. The only way to keep the mods after patching is to copy-paste the modifications to the patched code yourself...

I patched my site three times (in the three releases since I started my forums) and I've never lost a hack. You know when you download: changed files only, and then upload it to the root of the forums, then update by install/patch.php or install/upgrade_changed_files.php or something like that.

^ That's a good idea - I've always had to re-install my hacks each time I upgrade my forum. I'll try that next time :)

As for the Vinculum, Kasuto is the only one who can re-install the missing hacks.

That's what I was saying. Wouldn't it be better if one or two forum admins had FTP access to the forum files too?

Umh, I always patched it by hand, if I remember correctly, automatic patch gave out a huge amount of errors when I was upgrading from .9 to .10. I'll give it a try next time someone discovers a vunerability in viewtopic phpBB that allows other people to make your server explode.

I was actually thinking about asking him :|

<font color="DCDCDC">Back on topic, heh...

I always thought it would be a good idea to have a default font type or a default font size, but maybe not enough people change their font or font size for that to happen.</font>

Bah, you're all so lazy. :P I just type it out every post.
The basic code is [color=#xxxxxx]
.[/color] You can change the hex code to anything; mine is 336699 (and nobody better take it >:/). I'm in a habbit of typing it out, so I don't even notice the annoyance of it; it's just habbit. Also, I never used the thing from the profile, so I guess I don't miss it.

You were off by 5 days. [phpBB 2.0.14 released]

Also, since I am patching DSP to 2.0.14 right now, I just checked install/upgrade_to_latest.php (you were close) and I might have some bad news for you :/

[Click for full size][/url]

If you didn't replace the files in the zip folders and you just ran that php script, it only updated the database, leaving the files untouched. That means you were only updating the version number, leaving the old version of the files. AS: you should patch your board ASAP if that's what happened. Most script kiddies won't even try to do anything stupid when they see the lastest version number. Morons like God just look at version numbers and take advantage of well known vunerabilities in unpatched boards. (Heck, we shouldn't even be calling that script kiddie "the hacker", but that's a different story.) With that said, security through obscurity is never something you should rely on. Better safe than sorry.

Oh, 2.0.14 being released also means The Vinculum is now another version behind... :?

^ You're right, kids these days. They're so lazy. Why use a browser? There's nothing wrong with doing "telnet kasuto.net 80" and typing the HTTP request strings. Psh, images, menus, user-friendly interfaces... Who needs that?

Thanks for telling me, I had no idea. I forgot I hadn't updated the subscription since I changed email accounts.
