The Vinculum

Kasuto is now 30 years old. In recognition of this fact, I encourage all of you to give me $30. Anyone? Well, it was worth a shot. At least now I can resonably complain about "kids these days."

Registration for new classes at my school has started this week, and I've got a pretty cool list of classes for next year:

Interactive Media Design I
English III Advanced Placement/U.S. History Combined
Psychology/Sociology
Anatomy Honors
Spanish II
Creative Writing
Film Studies
Astronomy

This is my main list. My alternative list includes:

Modern History
Contemporary Novels (might switch out with Creative Writing)
Web Page Design
Medical Therapeutics (I couldn't find another alternative, so I just picked this one.)

Can someone give me advice or recommendations for other classes?

What are your credit requirements?

My school requires a minimum of 28 credits to graduate. I'll have 31.5 credits (Driver's Ed counts as a half a credit) by the last semester of my senior year, but I want to take classes that will look impressive on college applications. I'm on block scheduling, if the credit requirements seem a little odd.

Unfortunately, my school doesn't cater to my chosen careers. I want to be a writer, director, author, playwright, and philosopher.

We require a minimum of 25 credits. I was thinking of going to the career and technology center that you can go to in junior and senior year and take classes there. I thought of taking their class about web design, HTML, and C++.

Why, oh WHY are US classes so much better than Scottish ones?! I got me doing "English", "French", "Computing" and "Psychology" this year, and yes, they are as vague and wide-covering as they sound.

Frankly, doesn't everyone here want to do at least two of those things? :?

Do Creative Writing. Just do it. Do it, do it, do it. Do it. Only 30% of AH English goes on writing original pieces of work - I'd metaphorically kill to be able to do a CW class here.

Also, I feel I should point out that the Psychology course in my school feeds on your sanity and/or soul. The everyday notes and textbook questions are embarrassingly easy, and then - BAM - you're faced with the most brutal test papers imaginable. Right now I am wading through the middle of an experimental research report which I think could easily be completed in a little over 500 words. Alas, that's not enough to satiate the beast, for It requires at least 1500! :x

I'm VERY tempted to do Creative Writing, but I think that Contemporary Novels would be an enjoyable class.

It's so ironic that the one year I have good classes to pick from is the one year that I don't have enough room for them.

If you have a study hall, I would take as many advanced placement classes as I could find.

The admission guys at good colleges and universities are going to be more interested in a strict schedule. It's cool that you're interested in writing/thought based studies, but keep in mind that, and the admission guys know this, that the teenage mind is pretty fickle. What interests you now may not interest you in ten years.

I'd still take classes that interest you, but take broader classes and eventually hone in on in your senior year, or college years, what interested you the most.

^ That's why I'm starting to take more of an interest in health classes. After Anatomy, I might take Physiology or something similar.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. I try to keep my educational options open as much as possible.

DON'T TAKE REAL CLASSES

DON'T TAKE REAL CLASSES

Holy shit I cannot stress this enough: Don't take anything that would require you to do work during Senior Year. Senioritis is NOT a myth. You will lose all desire to do work after you get into college.

Also: the fact that you picked easier classes Senior year isn't going to be the deciding factor on whether you get into college or not. Unless you're shooting for Harvard/UPenn/MIT or some other ridiculously competitive Ivy, I wouldn't stress about it.

^ I wish I could avoid work, but I'm going to be in advanced placement courses my senior year. Those classes give me college credits, so I'll have a little bit of breathing room when I start going to Carson-Newman.

Damn...maybe I'm just getting old...but it seems like classes are getting a little too far advanced for high school. I certainly didn't have classes like that to choose from.

I'd go with Creative Writing or Contemporary novels if given the choice. Or that film class.

I'd gladly take more advanced classes inlieu of the ones my old high school offered. The whole "no child left behind" is taken to literal extremes. Classes in my high school were like shoving bamboo splinter under your nails. Painfully slow. Exacerbated by that idiot in the back who pretends not to know to avoid work.

College is so much better.
