The Legends of the Triforce: The Next Chapter

By: WCS II

Chapter Twelve

The question was a fleeting thought, as he remembered what he had been sent in here to do.  So without much more thought, Terry slid off the edge of the groove this time, and rolled away, again covering his head.  It worked this time.  But not giving that much thought, he raced to the vines and clambered up them.  Now, how to get out?  Then it struck him, one lit torch, and one unlit; but how to light it?

Another idea, use the sticks he had been collecting, to carry the fire from one torch to the other.  He was starting to feel like he was an idiot for not having thought of that sooner.  Grabbing one of the Deku sticks, he placed one end in the fire of the lit torch, and waited till he was sure it was on fire.  Pulling it out, he was satisfied that it was a big enough flame.  Racing to the other torch, he stuck the stick in through one of the grating holes, and watched as the torch lit up like a Roman candle firework.

Spiting up all sorts of colors as it grew, when it was finally burning fully, the bars lifted from the door.  That done, Terry ran to the door, and quickly sought out the panel, he didn't know how long the torch would stay lit, and didn't want to find out.  Once he found the panel, he stomped hard, and went through the door as soon as there was room for him to go.  Wondering what to do with his lit firewood, Terry was looking for a place to discard it, but couldn't see anywhere that might not catch fire.  But his search soon found an answer when the stick finally started to be consumed by the fire, when it reached his hand he dropped it due to the heat, and it sputtered out, safely.

Thankful of that, Terry started towards one of the ledges, getting just close enough for the spider thing to drop down, but this time staying outside its range of attack.  Once it started to shake again, Terry was trying to think how to get rid of it, without risking losing his sword.  Then he remembered the slingshot, quickly pulling it out, and saddling a seed, Terry waited for the spider to turn around again.  When it did, he let fly the seed, without taking aim, the target was so big, and right in front of him, there was no way he could miss!  But he did.

Frowning, he cradled another seed, and this time took aim, when it exposed its underside once more, he let it have it.  Spinning the giant spider, till it stopped, dropped down, and waddled back up its thread of webbing.  Terry's frown creasing into a grumpily thin line, he saddled another seed, and took aim again.  Again the spider turned, and again Terry let the seed fly, hitting the creature just at the thorax area of the thread.  This time it fell on its back, and disappeared into a bailing puff of purple smoke.

Stepping to the edge, Terry looked over, and down the long shaft.  It was most certainly a long, long fall.  Or jump, depending on how you look at, Terry nervously chuckled to himself.  But still how did he know if this jump would land him on the webbing?  Looking around, he noticed a couple stones about two fists in length.  Thinking to use them, he picked one up, and dropped it as far out from the ledge as he dared lean.

Next thing he heard was dull thump, so that wasn't the right ledge.  He was about to move onto the next one, when he remembered that those giant spiders guarded all three ledges.  So walking back, he looked up at the other two.  Their soft sides were facing out, and that meant that he could probably hit them from here, if he aimed carefully.  Saddling one seed, he aimed as careful as he could, and let go.

It hit dead on, spinning the huge creature.  When it settled back down, Terry let another go, and with that, the creature dropped, and bounced around, till it would settle down and disappear much like everything else around here did when they were defeated.  This time though it left three green things on the ledge.  Racing over there, Terry picked them up, they looked like some sort of gems, but they were cut too perfectly to be natural, and they didn't look like any gem he knew of, still he should probably hold onto them.  Now it was turn for the last spider.

And it was dispatched of quickly enough, now leaving his attention to web down below.  He had the last big stone with him, and once again leaned as far as he would dare before letting it go.  Next he heard a splash, so that meant that it was able to pass through, and that meant it was to far out from the center, and he would risk not breaking it, so that left the last ledge, and no rocks to test it.  Though if it worked, it would have been a good thing.  So there he stood at the last ledge, trying to slow his heartbeat that was threatening to jump out of his chest with just the thought of jumping that far.

With one last deep breath, Terry jumped off as far as he could, before reaching the edge.  In a somewhat strange arc, it seemed as if he had jumped perfectly in line with the center of the tree, and started to fall.  His heart pounding all the way, he saw a fleeting image of the second floor, and then the first floor, then part of the tunnel, and a snap?  He had broken the webbing, and was now falling down once more.  Remembering a little from his diving lessons, he crossed his hands over his chest, and pointed his feet downwards together.

He didn't even get to here the splash he made as he plunged into the water below.  Next thing, he remembered was to get to the surface, and when he broke the surface Terry gasped for air that was knocked out of him in surprise when he fell into the water.  Slowly wading to a ledge in the water, he stood upon it to take in his surroundings, as he rubbed his arms to gain some warmth that he had lost.  He was in another room, with no apparent way out, and a vine creature on the ledge just to the left of the water.

"Water!?  Where is that coming from?" Terry asked himself aloud as he scanned the room once more, to note a giant grill just thin enough to prevent him from slipping through to explore.  Taking in the more details he now noted an unlit torch and webbing over something in the corner on the left ledge.  It looked much like another. door?  Well, now he knew where to go to get out, but what about how to get through it?

Reading his shield and sword, Terry hopped over to the ledge, and quickly cut down the vine creature.  Terry waltzed over to the webbing to see if he could just hack it out of the way, but the closer inspection told him that there was no way.  His only choice was to find some way to remove all of it, maybe burn it away.  Burn it?  Yeah, there was a torch on the other ledge, but, it was unlit.

Turning around to look at the torch he noticed a small mound on one of the edges of the other ledge.  Just like in that one room up top. Quickly making his way over to the other ledge, Terry examined things there, the torch itself was covered in webbing, so if they burn, lighting it would tell.  The only thing Terry saw to do was to stand on the metal switch, and see what would happen.  When he did this, he heard a click, a spark, and a roaring crackle, turning around to see what was happening, he saw that the torch had lit and was burning away the web.

So that explained that, next he had to light one of his sticks and burn the other web.  Repeating the process from upstairs, as it were, he quickly ran to burn away the web, and in a spectacular display of color and flares, the web was gone.  Now what about his stick?  Looking at the water he quickly doused the flame on the stick, and to his surprise found that the fire hadn't burned it at all.  Stepping on the panel Terry proceeded through the door, to find a bush in the center of the room, and bars falling over the door.

Remembering what the other Deku scrub had said, Terry cleared his throat.

"Deku Scrub, do not attack, it is I Terry." Voiced a hopeful Terry, though he felt awkward announcing his presence like.  He wasn't sure if it was the same one, but it was worth a try.  And he got a response.

"And why would that name mean anything to me?" Squeaked a high voice as another one of those things popped up, and reeled back.  Terry's eyes went wide as he knocked out the sticks and positioned the shield in front of him as he crouched behind it.  The hit was stronger than the other one's, it actually pushed him back.  But like before it bounced off and hit the second one, then the third struck, but instead of bouncing off it dropped down, crushed from the force that was exerted in launching it.
