INTRODUCTION

Did you ever wonder why something just had to happen to you? I did once. I lost almost everything I had because I was the chosen one. I lost my mother, father, the rest of my family, and most of my friends. All to one man who wanted to rule the world. The King of the Gerudo Thieves, Ganondorf Dragmire. He was more of an evil king to everybody. Well, everybody except for his underlings, that is. Now I am going to tell you how my life went from bad to worse. It all started years ago...

THE LEGEND OF
ZELDA
LOOKING BACK

It all started when I was a baby. The only reason I know of these events is because I have been having dreams of the past lately.

My mother cradled a baby boy, me, in her arms. My father stood behind my mom, resting his head on her shoulder and looking down at me. He wrapped his arms around her waist and she looked at him. “He looks just like you, Dylan,” my mother said.

My father smiled, “He has your eyes, though.”

They sat on a bed that was in the room and smiled down at me. My mother brushed her hand over my cheek. I reached up and took her finger in my small hands and started chewing on it. I didn’t have any teeth, though, so it was more like gumming.

Suddenly, the door shot open! “Kari! Dylan!” the Queen, Mariana, of Hyrule started, “The Damarians! They’re after Link and Zelda!”

My mother and father bolted to a stand-up position. “Why?” asked my father. Mariana shook her head to signify that she didn’t know.

“Mariana, where’s Zelda?” my mother asked, fear evident in her voice.

Mariana pulled back some white cloth of the bundle she had been carrying to reveal a sleeping baby girl. “Safe. For now.”

Then, a Sheikah woman walked into the room. “Highness…” Mariana pointedly cleared her throat at the way the woman addressed her. “Mariana, we have to get to safety!”

“You’re right, Impa.” Mariana turned back to my parents, “I suggest that you get Link somewhere safe. I’ll see to it that Zelda gets to a secure location as well.” Mariana turned to leave.

“Wait!” my mother called, “Dylan’s going with you!”

“What are you talking about Kari?” my father inquired.

“Go with them. Help protect Zelda.”

“What about you?” Impa asked from across the room.

“I’ll be fine. I’ll take Link someplace where they’ll never think to look.”

“But, Kari…” my father protested.

My mother kissed him, then broke away after a few moments. “Go. I’ll be fine. And so will Link.” My mother wwent over to a crib and grabbed a blue blanket. She wrapped the blanket around me. Then, she handed me to my father and let him hold me one last time while she put on her cloak. Then, she came over, took me in her arms, and said her good-byes. Then, she left.

CHAPTER ONE: DRAGMIRE’S FIRST VICTIM

My other took a white horse that she alwayss called Scorn. She mounted, still holding me in her arms. Then, we rode out of the stables and away from the castle.

We didn’t get far from the castle before we were pursued. My mother made Scorn quicken her quiet trot into an all out gallop. She also lifted the hood on her cloak and held me closer to her. It was raining and she wanted to shield me from the pounding water.

We rode into the night, pursued by the goons from Damara, until we reached a dense forest. Scorn could not go through the trees, because they were so close together, so my mother dismounted and sent the horse away. Then, she hastened into the forest since the riders were still closing in.

She weaved through the trees until she came to a clearing and the edge of a cliff. Desperate to find a way down, she began walking along the edge. Then she heard voices.

“There you are!” a Moblin exclaimed as it stepped into the clearing.

A man stepped out after it. He was of the Gerudo race. “Give me the boy!” he bellowed.

My mother just glared at him, “Never! Not even in you wildest dreams!” The man just laughed and walked toward us. “Stay back!”

“Hand over the boy!”

“I’d sooner burn in Hell or die under the wrath of the Goddesses!”

“Then so be it!” The man signalled to the Moblin, and it charged forward.

My mother took one step back, held me closer to her, and drew a dagger from her belt. She and the monlin fought, my mother getting damaged quite badly since she was shielding me and fighting with one hand. But, after a while, the Moblin became vulnerable. My mother took the opportunity and plunged her dagger into its head. The Moblin struggled for a few moments, and then fell to the ground, dead.

The Gerudo man smirked and advanced toward my mother and me. In turn, my mother stepped back. The man laughed, “You put on a show like that and now you’re cowering away? How pathetic!” My mother took another step back, but lost her footing due to a serious injury on her leg. The man laughed at my mother again. “Just give me the boy and I promise that you can go free.” The man bent over and reached for me.

My mother laid in wait, and when his hand got close enough, she bit him. The man let out a grunt from the pain. “Damn woman!” He picked my mother up by her throat, but she kicked him in the groin, and her dropped her.

“I’ll never let you have my son, Dragmire!!” With that, my mother rolled off of the cliff, sending both of us plummeting towards the swift current of the river below.

CHAPTER TWO: A NEW LIFE BEGINS

I don’t know how, but we survived the fall. My mother was able to swim, too! She kept us both above the surface so that we could breathe. By then, I was crying hysterically.

I really don’t know how long it was that we drifted down the river, but it was morning when someone finally found us on the riverbank. It was a young girl who had been fetching water from the river.

“Oh, Goddesses!” she exclaimed as she saw my mother’s battered body. “What happened here?” The girl bent down over my mother and flipped her onto her back. Then, using all of her might, she picked up my mother and myself and walked off into a lucious green forest.

The girl carried us for a while until we came to a clearing with a huge tree in it.

“Great Deku Tree! Look!” the girl called.

The tree furrowed its woody eyebrows, not that it seemed to have any eyes, and probably stared at us. “Where did you find theis one?”

“Down by the riverbank.” The girl answered.

My mother started coughing. “Please... I am... Kari...” The girl, Saria, and, I’m guessing, the tree looked at my mother. “Please... My baby... My son... Take care of him... Protect him... Please... Plea...” Mother fell silent.

“Son?” the girl asked to nobody in particular. I started crying almost directly after she said that. The girl ran over and bent over my mother. She moved part of the cloak to reveal me, wrapped in my blue blanket. She picked me up and started rocking me back and forth. “Shh, it’s okay. You don’t have to worry now.” I calmed down after a few minutes, and she looked at my blanket.

My blanket had my name sewn into it. “Link?” the girl said aloud. She hugged me and smiled. “Well then, Link. Welcome to the Kokiri Forest!”

“You’ll be taking care of him, then?” the Great Deku Tree inquired.

“Yes, that’s right. I just wish that we could have helped her more.”

“We did all we could. You know as well as I do that she lost far too much blood for us to do anything.” The tree furrowed its eyebrows again, “Those wounds aren’t fresh, who knows how long she could have been bleeding.”

“You’re right. I’ll send some people to bury her and make a memorial when I get back to the village.” Saria left the tree and headed int othe Kokiri Village with me in her arms.

CHAPTER THREE: LIFE IN THE KOKIRI FOREST

As the years passed, Saria was always by my side. She taught me everything that I would have to know. She taught me which plants were which and how to identify them. She was there when I took my first step, and when I fell and got cut. She even changed my diapers when I was a baby. I always found that embarrassing.

The years rolled by, and soon, I was ten years old! I was finally the same age as everybody else. You see, I learned that the Kokiri grow until they are ten, then they quit aging altogether.

Okay, Link,” Saria said to me as she stopped moving and probably stared at me, “Open your eyes!”

I opened my eyes, and saw a house! It wasn’t your everyday house with a roof, but a hollowed out tree! All Kokiri children lived in one. My very own house! Finally, my very own place to call home! “Woah!”

“Happy birthday!”

Saria and I spent the day moving all of my things into my new house. We finished by sundown. That night, while I laid in my bed, sleeping, a horrible nightmare haunted me.

It wasn’t the first one, though. I’d been having nightmares for about two weeks by that time.

In my dream, it was raining. I was sstanding in front of this really big wall that had logs in the middle of it. The logs began falling, and I heard something that sounded weird. I looked into the darkness and saw something white charging right for me! I jumped to my right, and watched a huge horse gallop away with two people on its back. One was a girl who looked to be about my age, and the other, a grown woman that looked vaguely familiar. When they were out of sight, I heard something else behind me. I turned and saw a huge black stallion with a Gerudo man sitting on it. He looked at me, smirked, and then shot a ball of magic at me.

“Hey! Wake up!” said a voice through the darkness. “Hey! Come on! Can Hyrule’s destiny really depend on such a lazy boy?”

I opened my eyes, and found a little glowing ball of light with wings in front of me.

“Finally! You’re awake!”

“Hey! You’re a fairy!” I said.

“Yep! The name’s Navi! Pleased to meet you!” I looked closer and saw that Navi was actually a very tiny person with blue hair, eyes, boots, and clothes. She reminded me of someone...

“I’m Link.”

“Well then, Link, get your butt in gear! The Great Deku Tree wants to see you!”

CHAPTER FOUR: SWORD AND SHIELD

Okay, when Navi told me that the Great Deku Tree wanted to see me, I didn’t know what to say. I knew what to do, though, so I got up and went to the door. Before I left, I grabbed my boots and put them on.

Once outside, I heard a familiar voice. “Hey, Link! What’s up?”

I saw that it was Saria and waved. I then climbed down the ladder to my house to meet her. “Hi, Saria!”

“Huh?” Saria was looking over my left shoulder. Then she smiled. “You’ve got a fairy now! How cool!”

“Yeah! Her name’s Navi. She says the Great Deku Tree wants to talk to me!”

Saria’s eyes grew wide. “Well what are you still doing here? Go! Hurry up and go! If he wants to talk to you then it must be important!” Saria started pushing me up the path.

“Okay, okay! I’m going!” Saria stopped pushing me. I turned around and faced her. “Bye!” I bolted off for the Great Deku Tree’s Meadow.

Now, just walking into the meadow would have been too easy. So, of course, Mido was blocking the path to get there!

“Hey, wimp! What do you think you’re doing over here?”

“The Great Deku Tree wants to see me, now move!”

“The Great Deku Tree wants to see YOU? HA! Why would he call you? You don’t even have a fairy!”

Navi growled and flew right at Mido. She crashed into his forehead purposely, knocking him on his butt.

“Ow! Hey!”

Navi hovered right in front of Mido’s face and glared at him. “I am Link’s guardian fairy! And the Great Deku Tree told me to bring Link to see him! Now let us through before I get really mad!”

“Oh, and what’s a fairy going to do?” Mido turned to me, “Even if I was to let you pass, you’d need a sword and shield! Get those and I’ll let you through!”

I shot off in search of a sword and shield. I knew that I could buy a shield, but I had no idea where to find a sword. So, naturally, I went to ask Saria. I knew she’d understand...

“That BUM!!” Saria yelled to nobody in particular after I told her. “Ooh! He makes me so mad!”

I put my hand on Saria’s shoulder to calm her down. “Saria, he was right! Navi tells me that monsters have been lurking around there lately! It’s dangerous!”

Saria stopped and looked at me. “I still think he’s a bum.” She then smiled, “But if you’re looking for a sword, I hid one through the hole that is up in the training grounds.”

“Cool!” I started off for the training area, “Thanks Saria!”

I ran to the training grounds, only stopping to pick up a few stray rupees. When I arrived, I wove through the fence and spotted the hole. Just big enough for me to crawl through. So that’s exactly what I did.

When I got to the other side of the hole, I discovered that I was covered in spider webs, so I batted them all off. Then, I looked around for someplace that Saria might have hidden the sword. I had to go to the other side of the area to look, that meant getting chased by boulders!

I got to the other side perfectly fine. I had to run, but who cares! That’s when I spotted it! A chest! I figured that Saria would have hid the sword in there. So I went over and opened it up. Sure enough, there was a sword. The Kokiri Sword, no less!

After about two minutes of admiring the blade, I placed it in the sheath that was laying at the bottom of the chest. Then, I strapped it around my back.

“Come on, Link,” Navi called to me, “Let’s go get a shield now!”

“Right!” We got out of the area the same way we got in. Of course, to get to the hole, we had to get chased again. “I know that they sell Deku Shields at the shop...” I thought aloud.

“How much to they cost?” Navi asked, interrupting my thoughts.

“Forty rupees.”

Navi looked at me, “Well, how many do you have?” She flew down to my belt and took my wallet off of it. She dumped the rupees out on the ground and started counting. “Fifty-three rupees! That’s perfect!” Navi put them all back in the pouch and handed it back to me. “let’s go!”

We went to the shop and walked inside. As always, they had Deku Nuts and Sticks. They also had arrows! But I only needed the shield.

“Hiya. What can I get for ya?” the shop owner asked us.

“I’d like to have the shield, please.”

He went over and got it off of the shelf. “That’ll be forty rupees.” I paid him, and he gave me the shield. I hooked the handles onto some bent iron that was on the sheath for my sword.

“Alright, Navi, let’s go see the Great Deku Tree!”
