Life in the Kokiri Forest by San Takahashi
CHAPTER THREE: LIFE IN THE KOKIRI FOREST

As the years passed, Saria was always by my side. She taught me everything that I would have to know. She taught me which plants were which and how to identify them. She was there when I took my first step, and when I fell and got cut. She even changed my diapers when I was a baby. I always found that embarrassing.

The years rolled by, and soon, I was ten years old! I was finally the same age as everybody else. You see, I learned that the Kokiri grow until they are ten, then they quit aging altogether.

Okay, Link,” Saria said to me as she stopped moving and probably stared at me, “Open your eyes!”

I opened my eyes, and saw a house! It wasn’t your everyday house with a roof, but a hollowed out tree! All Kokiri children lived in one. My very own house! Finally, my very own place to call home! “Woah!”

“Happy birthday!”

Saria and I spent the day moving all of my things into my new house. We finished by sundown. That night, while I laid in my bed, sleeping, a horrible nightmare haunted me.

It wasn’t the first one, though. I’d been having nightmares for about two weeks by that time.

In my dream, it was raining. I was sstanding in front of this really big wall that had logs in the middle of it. The logs began falling, and I heard something that sounded weird. I looked into the darkness and saw something white charging right for me! I jumped to my right, and watched a huge horse gallop away with two people on its back. One was a girl who looked to be about my age, and the other, a grown woman that looked vaguely familiar. When they were out of sight, I heard something else behind me. I turned and saw a huge black stallion with a Gerudo man sitting on it. He looked at me, smirked, and then shot a ball of magic at me.

“Hey! Wake up!” said a voice through the darkness. “Hey! Come on! Can Hyrule’s destiny really depend on such a lazy boy?”

I opened my eyes, and found a little glowing ball of light with wings in front of me.

“Finally! You’re awake!”

“Hey! You’re a fairy!” I said.

“Yep! The name’s Navi! Pleased to meet you!” I looked closer and saw that Navi was actually a very tiny person with blue hair, eyes, boots, and clothes. She reminded me of someone...

“I’m Link.”

“Well then, Link, get your butt in gear! The Great Deku Tree wants to see you!”
